Reddit Stealth Bans, How To Tell If You Exist

What is Reddit Stealth Banning?

Stealth banning is a very clever strategy and a little oblique, when Reddit bans a user, that user doesn’t see change in their routine and experience. When the truth is, that know one else can see them, so in Reddit they don’t exist. When you are banned in their community, your everyday interactions are concealed so, no other user can view your votes and comments or interact with you and your posts.

The Reddiquette is very strict and must always be adhered to, without falter, banning in Reddit is a daily occurrence. It is quite easy to find yourself on the wrong side of Reddit’s over ambitious spam filter. Most long time Reddit users go through several accounts at first, until they get the swing of things and are able to avoid “The Filter”.

How To See If Your Banned

The more cunning part about the stealth ban tactic is that you don’t know your banned, great spam filter in my opinion, but a little over zealous at times. To check to see if your banned you can follow these simple steps to see if you’ve been hit by the ban-hammer.

  1. Visit your user profile page while logged in. Example: “http://www.reddit.com/user/YourNameGoesHere/”
  2. Copy the url from above and log out of your account
  3. Paste the url into your address bar.
  4. If you see your account your safe, if you receive a “Page Can’t Be Found” page then you’ve been banned.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 makes $1 billion--in 16 days

The game developer announced today that Modern Warfare 3 generated $1 billion in worldwide sales in its first 16 days on store shelves. By comparison, the 2009 blockbuster film "Avatar" reached the $1 billion milestone 17 days after it opened.

Modern Warfare 3, which launched last month, has become the third Call of Duty game in as many years to reach $1 billion in total sales. However, Modern Warfare 2, which launched in 2009, took two months to hit $1 billion in worldwide revenue. Last year's Call of Duty: Black Ops needed 60 days to reach the milestone.

"Call of Duty is now amongst that rarified group of sustained franchises like 'Star Wars,' 'Harry Potter,' 'Lord of the Rings' and the National Football League that attract or engage tens of millions of people every year or every new release," Activision wrote in a statement today announcing Modern Warfare 3 sales.

Modern Warfare 3's success continues to defy critics who say that the time has come for the franchise to try out some fresh ideas, rather than stick to the typical run-and-gun experience that made it so popular initially.

"This is an exciting and rewarding game, but the series' signature thrills have lost some of their luster," Chris Watters, a reviewer at CNET sister site GameSpot wrote in his evaluation of the game. However, he couldn't deny the game's ability to deliver some of the more entertaining moments in gaming this year.

"Modern Warfare 3 iterates rather than innovates, so the fun you have is familiar," he wrote. "Fortunately, it's also utterly engrossing and immensely satisfying, giving fans another reason to rejoice in this busy shooter season."
Modern Warfare 3's latest sales feat comes just a month after Activision announced that Modern Warfare 3 made $400 million in its first 24 hours of availability. Launch day unit sales in the U.S. and U.K. hit a combined 6.5 million units.

Samsung’s Next Tablet Could Have Retina-Beating Display [RUMOR]

Samsung is developing an 11.6-inch tablet with a 2560×1600 pixel display, which might put the display of Apple’s next generation iPad to shame, Boy Genius Report claims, citing a “trusted source.”

The tablet will reportedly run Android 4.0 with a 2 GHz dual-core Exynos 5250 CPU, and it’s likely to be unveiled at the Mobile World Congress in February 2012.

This latest rumor goes hand in hand with rumors of Apple’s next generation iPad. Its A6 CPU will reportedly be very similar to the one in Samsung’s upcoming tablet.

As far as display resolution goes, the iPad 3 is rumored to have a 2048 x 1536 display, which would make Samsung’s rumored tablet superior in terms of pixel density (depending on the size of the iPad’s display).

For comparison, the pixel density in iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S Retina display is 326 pixels per inch on a 3.5 inch screen. It’s been matched by a few competitors – namely the HTC Rezound and the LG Optimus LTE – but it happened over a year after iPhone 4 first hit the market.

If the rumors are true, unlike the iPhone 4 at its launch, Apple’s next-gen iPad might not have the distinction of having the most advanced display on the market.

8 Weeks Later, How Do iPhone 4S Users Feel?

The iPhone 4S went on sale eight weeks ago Friday. So now that the hoopla has died down, the Apple store lines are a distant memory, an early bug with the phone's battery life has been resolved, and users have spent some time with Siri, how do they feel about their purchase?

Crimson Hexagon, a social media analytics firm, did some Twitter sentiment analysis to find out. The company examined more than 2 million tweets that mentioned the iPhone 4S, looking for strong opinions one way or the other as well as more nuanced, neutral reactions.

The result? Not quite as positive as Apple might wish. Some 37% of the tweets were generally favorable, 29% were negative, and 34% were neutral. More worryingly, the percentage of negative responses to the device is growing.

Not surprisingly, Siri dominated the conversation -- and by a slim margin, tweets about Siri are more negative (12%) than positive (11%). All of the neutral tweets were about Siri, too, detailing questions that had been asked of the 4S-based voice assistant, and the difficulty she often has in understanding users with accents.

Perhaps the most troubling news for Apple is that the battery problem with the iPhone 4S, supposedly solved by an iOS 5 update, does not appear to be going away. Some 11% of the tweets examined mentioned an issue with the battery draining faster than expected. When Crimson Hexagon did an earlier analysis of iPhone 4S tweets, in mid-November, just 7% had a negative impression of the phone's battery.

So how are you feeling, iPhone 4S owners? Are you happy with your purchase? Still getting used to Siri or dumped her altogether? And how's your battery life? Happy or regretful, angry or neutral, let us know in the comments.

iPads become child's play?

Crayola allows tots to doodle on the iPad using its iMarker just as they would a crayon on a coloring book. Tweens are able to belt out their favorite Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez tunes on a Disney microphone that turns the tablet into a karaoke machine. And technology accessories company Griffin enables teens to fly its toy helicopter by using the iPhone as a remote control.

This holiday season, toy makers have turned Apple Inc.'s pricey tablet and smartphone into playthings for kids. They figure in this weak economy, parents will be willing to splurge on toys for their children that utilize devices they already have — or want — themselves.

Tiffany Fessler of Gainsville, Ga., certainly was willing to do that even though when she initially bought her $829 iPad she never imagined she'd be sharing it with her 20-month-old son. But whenever she sat down to check emails on the iPad, he'd climb into her lap wanting to use it.

So, Fessler decided to get him the $29.99 Crayola iMarker, which transforms the iPad into a digital coloring book using a Crayola's free ColorStudio HD application that parents can download. Kids can draw and color using the iMarker, which has a soft tip so it doesn't scratch the tablet's glass screen.

"When you have a screaming toddler in a restaurant or any public area, you want to have something to calm him down with," says Fessler, 39. "This is just another way to keep him entertained."

That the iPad and iPhone have infiltrated the $22 billion toy market this season is no surprise. Smartphones and tablets — particularly Apple products — are more popular than ever with people of all ages. This year, Apple is expected to double the number of iPhones sold to 90.6 million worldwide, according to research firm Gartner, while the number of iPads sold is expected to triple to 46.7 million.

And Apple products have a certain "cool factor" with kids that toy companies, which can make up to half of their revenue during the holidays, are hoping to tap into. In fact, the iPad and iPhone are among the most coveted electronics this holiday season among kids. About 44 percent of 6- to 12-year-olds want the iPad this year, according to a survey by research firm Nielsen. The iPod touch came in the No. 2 spot with 30 percent, followed by the iPhone at 27 percent.

Not to mention, anyone who's a parent knows all too well that babies and older kids alike love to fiddle with or drool all over mommy's iPad. Nearly 40 percent of 2-to 4-year-olds have used a smartphone, iPad or video iPod, according to a survey by nonprofit group Common Sense Media. That number rises to 52 percent for 5- to- 8 year olds. And even 10 percent of infants have used one of the devices before their first birthday.

"It's mostly something for kids to use in the car or at the doctor's office," says Chris Baynes, a toy analyst. "It's a way to get the kid to be quiet."

With that in mind, Crayola teamed up with Nashville, Tenn.-based Griffin Technology, which is mostly known for selling iPhone and iPad cases and car chargers, to make the iMarker and the ColorStudio HD app for kids. The iMarker, which is like a stylus that resembles a Crayola marker, is targeted at children ages three and up.

"Regardless of who they buy it for, once it is in the household, we know that kids use it," says Vicky Lozano, vice president of marketing at Crayola, which makes the iMarker.

Other toy makers also have gotten into the game:

— Griffin's $49.99 remote-controlled toy helicopter is aimed at teens over 14. Called the "HELO TC," it flies using a device that plugs into an iPhone, iPad or iPod. A free app turns the touchscreen of the devices into a cockpit that controls the helicopter.
— Mattel Inc.'s Fisher-Price unit is selling "The Laugh and Learn Apptivity Case" aimed at babies for $15. The case locks the iPhone into a colorful, easy to grab case that looks like a big round rattle. The case stops babies from making unwanted calls and protects the iPhone from something else: drool. Parents can open up three free apps that play music, read words aloud and count numbers. The company plans to release an iPad version of the case this spring.
— Disney has three offerings. The "Disney Spotlight" microphone, which is $69.99 or $99.99 for a wireless version, plugs into the iPad and allows kids to sing along to Disney songs from shows such as "Hannah Montana" — or to their own music — and record their own music video. Disney's $79.99 AppClix digital camera enables kids to upload their pictures to an iPad and a free app allows them add Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck into the photos. And Disney teamed up with Canadian toy maker Spin Master to create "Appmates," a toy car based on the characters from the company's "Car's 2" animated movie. One car sells for $12.99 while a two-pack goes for $19.99. Using a free app, kids can "drive" on different courses by moving the car across the iPad screen.
— Spin Master, which makes toys such as Air Hogs and Bakugan, started a new line this year of toys for the iPad and iPhone called "AppFininity." Its first toy in the line is the $19.99 AppBlaster, a plastic gun for kids over age eight. After slipping an iPhone or iPad touch on top of the AppBlaster, kids can shoot at aliens that pop up on the screen.

Analysts say these toys are just the beginning of a new niche for toy makers. Indeed, most of the companies say they plan to roll out more products for smartphones and tablets — including some that use Google Inc.'s Android software— next year.

"I think it's going to be a growing segment," says Jim Silver, editor-in-chief at toy review website TimeToPlaymag.com. "Next year, there will be even more (products) than you can possibly imagine."

Is Google X All About Highly Intelligent Robots?

One redditors' account suggests Google has developed crazy human-like AI

UPDATE: The thread still exists as do the comments, but the original post has been removed. The post was up for less than two hours. It also appears to be unable to be found via search on reddit.

ORIGINAL ARTICLE: Remember that report a couple of weeks back about Google X – the highly secretive experimental development arm of Google? According to sources, Google X is a “top secret lab in an undisclosed Bay Area location” that is working on tons of awesome/frightening stuff. You know, robots and such.

Well, there’s a guy that has made a top post on reddit who claims he has direct knowledge of the things taking place at Google X. And apparently, we’re all screwed.

That’s because the main focus of the project is super-intelligent robots that are virtually indistinguishable from humans when it comes to conversation and situational reactions. Here’s what user J32PMXR has to say about Google X [Turing test link added for clarification] :

This is in total violation of the NDA, but I don’t care anymore. Sue me.
The central focus of Google X for the past few years has been a highly advanced artificial intelligence robot that leverages the underlying technology of many popular Google programs. As of October (the last time I was around the project), the artificial intelligence had passed the Turing Test 93% of the time via an hour long IM style conversation. IM was chosen to isolate the AI from the speech synthesizer and physical packaging of the robot.

According to [some guy on reddit], the mechanics of the robot are not very impressive – no spider bots or anything – but that’s because it wasn’t really the focus. The redditor says that he had contact with the robot, and it’s “the most amazing thing [he's] ever seen.” It’s apparently incredibly smart, and interacts in ways that are uncannily human-like.

The redditor is currently answering questions posted to his thread, and is revealing the story a little by little.
I was unfairly terminated along with quite a few of my coworkers. It was a small enough group that they will probably figure out who I am, but like I said, I don’t care.
I’m not going to answer all of the questions, but for #6, our AI is practically like talking to a human. Siri can give you information, but we can give you conversation. We can also go full genius mode which essentially gives you the sum of internet knowledge via conversation.
It can do objects by using an advanced version of the Google Goggles software. It also has a suite of basically every sensor that could be put on it; optical, laser, infrared, ultrasonic, depth cameras, etc.
It needs an internet connection. Last I heard, it was using an average of only a couple hundred kilobytes per second. Most of the processing is done onboard, internet is used for external information.

Of course, there is absolutely no proof that this person is legit. As one commenter puts it, “There is no font bold enough for the [Citation Needed] this post requires.” But his account of what’s going on at Google X falls in line with other previous rumors. If this guy’s for real, it looks like we need to begin bracing ourselves for the end, folks. Because once they put this super-smart robot software into one of those giant spiders…I don’t want to live on this planet anymore.

Facebook to host online casinos?

There is a limitless need on the part of social networks to make limitless amounts of money.

If you are Facebook and you might, possibly maybe, have an IPO shindig next year, you have to help potential investors believe that your revenues are rosier than an English country garden.

This might be why reports are emerging from the United Kingdom that Facebook is considering allowing casinos to operate within its virtual friendship facility.

When I say casinos, I mean ones with real money.

The Daily Mail fulminates at the prospect. It cites the knowledgeable people at eGaming Reviewin insisting that Facebook is in negotiations with around 20 gambling experts, consultants, and homes of online gambling.

(Credit: Chris Matyszczyk)

It suggests that companies such as Gamesys and 888 might be first in line to open virtual but very real casinos on Facebook.

You might wonder why the U.K. might be the testing ground for such a risk-positive venture. Well, the country is a little more welcoming to online gambling that some, more puritan nations.

Indeed, it's barely possible to watch an English Premier League soccer game without one of the two teams wearing a logo from an online gambling site. And so-called betting shops bring a polished and charming presence to Britain's high streets, mottled as they are by cheap clothing stores and imported American coffee houses.

Facebook reportedly doesn't deny that meetings on this subject have taken place. I have asked the company to clarify just what stage such negotiations might have reached.

The Mail does quote eGaming Review editor James Bennett, who said: "Facebook is looking for new revenue streams and the gambling industry is looking for new markets. There is still a lot of work needed to be done, not least what percentage of revenues gambling companies would have to give away to Facebook and the issue of age verification."

Of course there will be those who will worry that children's minds will be polluted by the notion that gambling--like sex, drugs, and reality TV--is a sin that can only lead to pain and sorrow.

Some might think, though, that any child of reading age might have noticed events on Wall Street and mused that online gambling has been comfortably institutionalized into contemporary society.

Updated at 1: 35 p.m. PST: Facebook has reacted with some angst to the Daily Mail's suggestion that children might be at risk. Spokesman Andrew Noyes told me: "Our commitment to providing a safe, secure and appropriate experience for teenagers is a fundamental principle of Facebook. The suggestion that we would make any decision that doesn't carefully consider the impact on this audience is short-sided and, frankly, offensive to the hundreds of people who work to keep kids safe and the many parents at Facebook. Beyond that, we're not going to comment on the multiple layers of speculation occurring here."

One can with some safety conclude, however, that negotiations with a view to introducing real money gambling on the site have, indeed, taken place.

The baby names are out! BabyCenter revealed on TODAY its most popular names for 2011 – a list eagerly anticipated each year by name nerds and parents. (If you are both, like me, even better!)

This year it’s all about two letters: A and N. For girls, the top five names all end with –a: Sophia, Emma, Isabella, Olivia and Ava. On the boys’ side, the –n ending ruled five of the top eight: Aiden, Jackson, Mason, Jayden and Ethan.

Top Baby Names of 2011

Girls                                       Boys
Sophia                             Aiden
Emma                              Jackson
Isabella                           Mason
Olivia                              Liam
Ava                                 Jacob

Though there are many rumors around the new iPad’s specs, apple freaks predict that the camera will be upgraded to 5 MP with LED flash technology. It will also feature an upgraded processor (A6) are new version of existing OS and iCloud sync.
Beside camera and other speculation, it’s a bit difficult to believe that Apple would actually consider making it thicker even if it is already .7 mm thicker, as Apple is been fairly obsessed with slimming down its products.

iPad 3 rumor roundup

With the success Apple is enjoying with the iPad 2, I'm not sure it even needs to make an iPad 3.

They will, of course. Just as they've done over the past two years, Apple will likely unveil its latest, greatest tablet around April 2012. Until then, it's open season on iPad 3 rumors.

In this ongoing blog post, we'll be collecting the best, most interesting rumors and predictions for the Apple iPad 3. Which of these rumors will pan out? Only time will tell.

February 10
The iPad's fiercest competition comes from inexpensive 7-inch tablets, such as the Amazon Kindle Fire and the Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet. Steve Jobs famously called the iPad's 7-inch competitors "dead on arrival," but there's good reason to believe that Apple won't just ignore this growing threat. A 7-inch iPad with a $300 price tag could be just the thing to extinguish the Kindle Fire.

May 5
Everyone predicted that 3D was going to be huge in 2011. It wasn't. 3D TVs were a bust, the Nintendo 3Ds had to slash its price to compete, and 3D movies became synonymous with garbage. Still, the 3D display technology rumored for the iPad 3 could succeed where others have failed. By leveraging head-tracking camera software and the existing gyroscope sensor, iPad apps and videos could be made to trick your senses into perceiving 3D, with no glasses required.

June 7
Could 2012 hold two iPads instead of just one? This rumor goes hand in hand with the rumor of the iPad Mini, then goes further to claim that it will live side by side with the original 10-inch model. The premise for the rumor stems from code within iOS 5, which is more than can be said of most of the rumors on this list.
Source: TUAW

August 26
The idea that Apple's next-generation iPad would use a next-generation processor is to be expected. The more interesting tidbit from this rumor is that the chip may not be ready in time for the iPad's expected spring debut, pushing the product back to fall.

September 6
This is another rather obvious prediction. In Apple's view, mobile technology can never be too thin. The iPad's current construction is devoted mostly to its battery, so a lighter, slimmer battery is crucial to further whittling down its design.

October 15
The Apple iPhone 4S was sold almost entirely on two features: a better camera and a new virtual assistant named Siri. Software hackers quickly found a way to enable the iPad's version of the Siri assistant, buried in the code for iOS 5. Unfortunately, without the cooperation of Apple's servers, Siri will not work on iOS devices that Apple has not yet deemed ready for the feature.

October 22
With Apple pushing the benefits of the wireless "PC-Free" features of iOS 5, it seems only a matter of time before Apple's universal dock connection disappears like some kind of vestigial tale carried over from its iPod ancestry. But before it disappears entirely, the folks at Macotakara believe there will be a new type of dock connection introduced that will break compatibility with all previous docking accessories.
Source: Macotakara

October 26
Of all the iOS devices out there (including the iPhone and iPod Touch), the iPad is the last to receive the upgrade to Apple's Retina Display technology. The problem is that touch-screen manufacturers simply cannot yet make panels at the iPad's size with the same 326ppi pixel density. They can get close, though. QXGA resolution (2,048x1,536) gets you a pixel density of 264ppi, which is twice that of the iPad 2.Also see: iPad 3's dense display a challenge for manufacturers

November 16
Qualcomm is the current manufacturer for the 3G mobile chip inside the iPhone 4S, so it stands to reason that Apple may take advantage of its latest and greatest chip for use in the iPad 3. Using the 4G-compatible mobile chip would make the iPad 3 the first 4G device Apple has produced.

November 22
Forbes claims that Apple will ditch its IPS technology for a lower-powered Sharp display with a higher resolution and a thinner profile that will allow for a thinner overall design.
